Forces should call 0845 113 5000 and ask to be transferred to the Force Contact Centre Duty Inspector.
The Duty Inspector will then provide the Force contact with the mobile number of the Duty Ballistics Expert.
The Duty Ballistic Expert will then make any further decisions. If in alignment with the call out and submission criteria, the Duty Ballistic Expert will arrange for the NABIS hub to be opened.
The criteria for calling out a NABIS Expert are;
a) In response to a new incident (within the previous 5 days) where a firearm has been discharged resulting in a fatal injury to any person or where there is a suspected link to terrorism.
b) In response to a new incident (within the previous 5 days) where a firearm has been discharged resulting in injury to any person or, where there has been no injury but the shooting constituted a major risk to the public.
DNA and fingerprint work can be done by West Midlands Police Forensic Services Unit but there is an extra cost for non WMP forces which is not part of the NABIS service.
