Burglar With Gun Jailed For 12 Years

19th January 2017

A burglar who used a gun in a terrifying house robbery has been jailed for 12 years.

Calvin Hunt, 29 of Truro Walk, Chelmsley Wood, was found guilty of robbery at Birmingham Crown Court last week after he broke into the Longley Walk property on 7 July 2014 and threatened the family with a gun.

He fired a shot which embedded itself in a kitchen worktop and the family fled the house; Hunt then searched the property stealing a handbag.

He left the scene in his car and then a few hours later reported it as stole. He also convinced his girlfriend, Safiyah Benjamin, to provide him with a false alibi hoping this would hide his crime.

But detectives investigating the robbery saw through their lies and pieced together evidence which secured their conviction.

The court heard that Hunt called Benjamin five times during the times she said they were together, proving that she had lied. The 28-year-old girlfriend, from Dunhill Avenue, Coventry, was jailed for 10 months for providing a false alibi.

Detective Constable Kate Fitzgerald, from Solihull's Investigation Team, said: "The robbery must have been a terrible ordeal for the family and we hope that today's sentence brings them some comfort and that they see justice has been done.

"A dangerous criminal is now behind bars and his girlfriend has also lost her liberty and will now have a police record for lying.

"We hope this serves as a stark warning to anyone thinking of covering up other people's criminal activities.

"If you lie to the police about serious matters then you will be brought to justice."
