Both men were taken to police stations where they will be questioned by detectives.

Liverpool Area Commander Mark Wiggins said: "We know the harmfirearms can cause in our communities and the recovery of this weapon will help to reduce the threat and risk on the streets.

"But we still need to do more. We know there are other firearms out there and we need our communities to work with us and tell us where guns are being stored and who is involved in gun crime.

"I can promise our communities that tackling the issue of gun crime is a top priority for the whole of the force and this action is part of extensive work targeting those people we suspect of bringing guns onto the streets.

"Our action will be continuing in the coming days and weeks, so call us today and we will act. You can call our dedicated hotline or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"We remain relentless in our aim to remove the blight of guns from our communities."
