Man Jailed For Stun Gun Disguised As Mobile Phone

14th September 2015

A man who carried a "stun gun" which was disguised as a mobile phone has been sentenced to five years' imprisonment.

Robert Bas, 30 (03.06.85) of Campden Road, Croydon was jailed for five years at Croydon Crown Court on 10 September, after being found guilty of possession of a disguised firearm.

The court heard that on Friday, 26 December 2014 Bas was arrested for affray. He was escorted back to Croydon police station where he was searched. During the search officers recovered a replica mobile phone from Bas's jacket. Checks were conducted on the device and an electronic barb was accidently discharged.

There were no injuries.

Bas was bailed while further checks were conducted on the replica mobile phone. When the results came back, it confirmed the mobile phone was in fact a disguised firearm.

Bas was due to return on bail but he did not.

Arrest enquires were conducted and Bas was arrested on 27 June for failing to return from police bail. He was then charged with possession of a prohibited weapon (a disguised firearm) and remanded to attend court.

Detective Inspector Rob Allen, from Croydon CID, said: "This is an excellent result for my team. Through diligent enquiries they have removed a disguised firearm and a potentially dangerous individual from the streets, thereby protecting the residents of the Borough."
